Volunteer

Casa del Herrero is able to address diverse restoration projects and provide vibrant educational experiences thanks to our dedicated volunteer gardeners and museum docents.

Museum Docents

Casa del Herrero and all museum visitors benefit from the storytelling skills and generosity of volunteer docents. Docents lead 90-minute walking tours on Wednesdays and Saturdays at 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. The 90-minute walking tour consist of 1-12 visitors, who have made advance reservations to visit the estate.

The Casa del Herrero Docent Training Program is an inviting opportunity for those interested in sharing the unique intersections of architecture, craftmanship, Spanish antiquities, landscape design, and California history showcased at Casa del Herrero.

Active docents who provide regular monthly tour support receive privileged access to docent intensification programs, special museum events and docent appreciation parties.

Garden Volunteers

The gardens spaces at Casa del Herrero were thoughtfully designed in the 1920’s by Ralph Stevens, Lockwood de Forest, and Francis T. Underhill to embrace a complimentary multitude of landscaping styles. Nearly 100 years later, the Casa’s gardens still shine thanks to the dedication of the garden staff and volunteer gardeners.

In order to maintain the health and vibrancy of the gardens, Casa del Herrero welcomes volunteers of all skill levels to assist the grounds staff with fine gardening, plant propagation, weeding, gleaning, pruning, raking, composting, planting, as well as harvesting botanicals and blooms for flower arrangements showcased throughout the house museum.

Each Friday, registered volunteers are welcomed between 9:00am and 12:00pm to assist with various seasonal gardening projects and tasks. All volunteers should expect to get their hands dirty in a beautiful and friendly environment. Friday garden volunteers must be at least 18 years old.
