Director of Curation, Conservation & Exhibitions

Classification:  Full-time (40 hour work week), salaried, Exempt

Reports To: Executive Director

Salary Range: $70,000 - $80,000

Schedule: Monday to Friday

Description: Casa del Herrero is seeking a highly skilled and experienced individual to fill the role of Director of Curation, Conservation, and Exhibitions. This position requires a deep understanding of historic preservation, museum curation, and exhibition development, as well as strong leadership abilities.

Responsibilities:

1. Curation: 

  • Oversee the curation of Casa del Herrero's collection, ensuring proper documentation, storage, and preservation of historical artifacts, artwork, and archival materials.

  • Develop and implement strategies for cataloging and inventorying the collection.

  • Collaborate with staff and stakeholders to create engaging narratives that highlight the cultural and historical significance of Casa del Herrero and its collection.

2. Conservation:

  • Lead efforts to preserve and maintain the physical integrity of Casa del Herrero's collections.

  • Develop and implement conservation plans and protocols for the ongoing care of the collection, including preventive maintenance and restoration projects.

  • Work closely with conservation specialists to ensure that preservation work adheres to best practices and regulatory requirements.

3. Exhibitions:

  • Conceptualize, plan, and execute exhibitions that showcase Casa del Herrero's collection and interpret its historical context.

  • Coordinate with internal and external stakeholders to develop exhibition themes, select objects, and design immersive visitor experiences.

  • Oversee the installation and de-installation of exhibitions, ensuring that timelines and budgets are met while maintaining the highest standards of quality and safety.

4. Management:

  • Provide leadership and direction to the Fine Arts & Furnishings committee, fostering a collaborative and inclusive work environment.

  • Manage departmental budget, resources, and schedule to ensure efficient operations and timely project completion.

  • Collaborate with other departments, including events & marketing, development, and programming to integrate curation, conservation, and exhibition initiatives into broader institutional goals.

Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in museum studies, art history, historic preservation, or a related field.

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in museum curation, conservation, or exhibition design, with a proven track record of successful project management.

  • Deep knowledge of historic preservation principles and practices, particularly as they relate to historic houses and gardens.

  • Strong leadership and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with diverse teams and stakeholders.
