On the morning of June 29, 1925, a 6.3-magnitude earthquake decimated the downtown buildings of Santa Barbara. That same morning, George Fox Steedman sent for word about his Casa del Herrero—an architectural and landscaping project that had taken years to design, prepare, and make his family's own. Filled with treasures from the Spanish Golden Age and beyond, Steedman learned that not only was his home still standing—it had not been damaged at all. Steedman moved in that very morning.
This year, Casa del Herrero celebrates its 100th anniversary, having withstood the test of time and natural disasters—from earthquakes to floods, debris flows, and unprecedented storms. A testament to architectural and engineering feats of significant local architects including Lutah Maria Riggs, George Washington Smith, the landscape architect Raph T. Stevens, and more - the Casa invites our local community to join us in a day of celebration!
