Junior Groundskeeper/Gardener
Classification: Full-time (40 hour work week), hourly, non-exempt position
Department: Grounds
Reports To: Grounds Manager
Salary Range: $23 to $25/hour
Schedule: Monday to Friday
Description: The Junior Groundskeeper/Gardener position is responsible for garden and grounds maintenance under the direction of the Grounds Manager or designee. This is a front-line position in primary plant care, including: weeding (by hand, hoe, spade), manual-watering and operation of irrigation systems, mulching, planting, pruning, grooming, trapping rodents, removal of trash and debris, and generally maintaining aesthetic standards of the gardens and grounds of Casa del Herrero. This is a full-time, hourly, non-exempt position reporting to the Grounds Manager.
Responsibilities:
-Provides general plan care of the grounds and gardens
-Assists with maintenance of: trails, brush clearing, composing, weed mitigation
-Operates garden machinery, both mechanical and non-mechanical, including blowers, trimmers, electric carts, tractors, other vehicles
-Assists in maintenance and repairs of irrigation systems
-Conducts tasks assigned in accordance with the Casa’s safety procedures
-Works collaboratively with the Grounds and Gardens staff and Committee volunteers
Qualifications:
-Knowledge of general gardening and plant care maintenance
-Excellent attention to detail, organization, and time management skills, ability to meet deadlines
-Motivated self-manager, ability to work within a team, ability to successfully communicate with a wide variety of individuals
-Strong interpersonal skills and professional ability to represent Casa del Herrero to volunteers and visitors
-Enthusiastic embrace of a fast-paced work style that involves a high degree of collaboration
-Positive attitude, openness to an organization that is quickly growing, evolving, and developing new initiatives and approaches
Requirements:
-Some experience in gardening and landscaping, preferably in a professional setting
-Experience working within a team, collaborating with others to achieve overall goals
-Ability to work full-time, in-person, including possible weekends and/or evenings as needed
-Acceptance of outdoor work environment, including temperature fluctuations, rain, dust, insects, small wild animals, and sun exposure
-Ability to perform physically strenuous work assignments on a regular basis
-Ability to stand/walk for extended periods of time, lift and carry up to 75 lbs, bend, squat and walk gardens, trails, and undeveloped woodlands
